It was the kind of weekend I'd be jealous of if it weren't mine.

Of the extended deep-freeze came one very big, very good thing: the irrigation pond in the little wind-protected valley at the treeline behind our house frozen solid and mirror-smooth.

On Saturday, Beary made a run into town for skate-sharpening and the necessary supplies - hotdogs and marshmallows and such - and we loaded up the truck and the three-wheeler and headed across the field.

After sunset, the pond was lit by a full moon bright enough for us to keep skating, and our musical accompaniment was the Saturday Night Oldies show on local radio. I hate to rub it in, but we just about died of awesomeness.

I'm sharing this Great White North moment with Visible Monday

  1. GREAT outfit! Love the colors and the line and the whole thing!

  2. That sounds amazing! I've only tried ice skating once, and it was on a bumpy backyard pond. No full moon, no marshmallows, and I wasn't very good. However, I did roller skate regularly and actually did that again last summer after, oh, 40 years. Still no full moon or marshmallows, though. I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Love the boots, as with all your boots!

  3. Oh, how wonderful! I especially like the line, it was the type of weekend I would be jealous of, if it wasn't mine. Boy, that IS when you have the icing on the cake. The thing is, I think people sometimes have these incredible moments and don't appreciate them. So, it's lovely that you took a bite of life's sweet cherry and then swallowed it whole! Love your Great White North photos.

When I skated outside last, I fell and broke my wrist, so I haven't skated much of late. I know... not a very good Canadian, am I?

    Cheers from Rosemary in England,

  4. Like a real-life dream! Thanks for sharing the fabulous pictures - the campfire, your graceful skating, it's all so wonderful.

  5. Ahh, Amber, that looks FANTASTIC! I love your skating collage so much - the combination of ice, snow and fire, the bright moon, your happy glowing face, your skating prowess, your lovely man, the his'n'hers skates... It looks and sounds like a fabulous time was had.
And your pose in that first photo, and the skirt, have a little of the skater about them too! All those lovely soft grey/black shades and stripes, those wonderful boots.
    Just gorgeous! xxxx

  6. . I hate to rub it in, but we just about died of awesomeness. <--- spectacular!

  7. I have almost died from jealousy because of your awesomeness :o

So much bold stripey goodness here. You remind me how much I love stripes, and that one cool striped cardi or scarf could really heat things up in my closet :)

  8. Oh man, what amazing pictures! What wonderful memories you made. I can feel them myself!
Love all your stripes and angles!

  9. If you can't vacation in the tropics, jump in and enjoy what you have: a weekend winter wonderland delight for two, please.

  10. Uh oh no the least envious of your awsome time ice skating :)

  11. Beauty, YES!!!! Breathtaking. Joey and I have skates (he used to work at the ice rink in high school). His first-ever Christmas present to me was a pair of skates. What the hell am I doing in the South?!! I can feel, hear, and smell all the deliciousness of that evening. You look glorious in your outfit(s). I think this was a week for stripes, what with you, Lynn (Practical Paralegal), and me, and probably more out there as well. The boots are very cool too.

    Stay euphoric. :-)

  12. Thank you for sharing these pics, my dear Amber. I can see and feel the frozen waters, the music and all the wonders you describe.

  13. Love the combination of neutrals. You are awesome!

  14. Ohgosh! That sounds so magical. I sometimes think you live in a wonderland, a barn, chickens, night time ice skating! Even my city-bred butt wishes I could be out there now.

  15. Oh, what wonderful photos of the pond! I love each and every one of the.

And this outfit is gorgeous. Perfect neutral pairing, amazing necklace (you have quite a few of those) and fabulous cardigan. One of my favorite looks of yours!

  16. Everything about this post is poetry. I am grateful that you shared your magical evening with us. I haven't been outdoor skating for about 20 years, and you've helped me recall joyful memories. Thanks, eh!

  17. Gloat away, you skating awesome fiend! I can hear those freshly sharpened blades cutting into the ice and the pops from the fire. Man, what a fun time - with moonlight even?!
Of course your outfit looks snuggling cozy but also sharp (fingersnap). Great to see you!

  18. I haven't been ice-skating in 35 years!

  19. What a perfect opening line! Not only intriguing.... but true! Thank you for sharing so eloquently a perfect evening. Your words are as rich as your captivating photos! I will have to keep this post bookmarked under quick mental getaways!

  20. What a great Saturday night! You do appear to be a very good ice skater. The weather looks just like our's here in Denmark, only we don't have a smooth pond - and I certainly don't skate! We used to do winter picnics too, but since I started studying again there just hasn't been time for it.

You outfit is lovely, the belt and boots are so beautiful, as is your necklace. Your mother really has an eye for jewellery!

  21. I'm totally jealous! One of my dreams is to live on a property with a large open field and/or pond. I just love open space more than anything. Your whole night sounds cozy and magical. Love the outfit, too! :)

  22. Perfect ... every piece ... every nuance! And I so would love to go skating with you. You deserve every minute of the fun. Whooop-whoop!

  23. Awwww, you sweetly sly girl!!! I love the way you posted this! Very cool -- the weekend and the writing. Sounds totally divine!! I mean, who gets to do this??? You. Love the pictures!!!!

  24. Very romantic! Sometimes I end up on you posts for an extended amount of time, soaking up your photos and commentary. This was one of those times.

  25. I just found your blog via Thrift and Shout. You are so inspiring! I love your boots and the way you create your outfits. I'm always looking for inspiration. At 45 I feel as though I have to experiment with clothes so I can look cool, but not like I'm trying to look 20 again. You've nailed it! Bravo.

Thank you for your comments!
