First Position

Hello! I'm Amber, and welcome to Butane Anvil.

Thank you to everyone on my blogroll and "Following" list for the inspiration. Most recently, Lynne's post helped me jump in. I will have more to say as we go along, but want to get started in time to participate in Patti's Visible Monday.

scarf: Charming Charlie
bolero sweater: River Island, Colours
ballerina print dress: Max C. London, Winners
obi belt: Modcloth
striped dress worn as skirt: Trendyland, Winners
boots: Gianni Bini, Dillard's

De-layered, with goosebumps! To keep it temperate on the side of the building with windows, the weather in my office is generally reminiscent of April.

watch: a gift from my mother
usual wrist wear: silver Om bracelet (Lollapalooza vendor, early '90s), silver & leather "hands" bracelet (AGO, precious gift, early '90s, replaced 2005), rubber O-ring

Late to the party as usual - Megan started it - I like it here! I have my (very late) lunch and my wastebasket is "CERTIFIED FR33 OF W3APONS OF MA55 D35TRUCT1ON" (one can't be too careful, which is why my first post isn't titled "Private Dancer" either).

Thanks for visiting, and for bearing with me while I figure this thing out. I welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions.

    1. Thank you so much for coming by with a warm welcome, Megan - the admiration is mutual!

  4. I love your hair too - what kind of work do you do that allows you to wear it thusly? My work is cool with tattoos, but I'd never be able to do my hair fun like yours.

Love your style - any woman with an obi belt is good in my books! I'm a follower (I'm nepenthes - stupid Google).

    1. Thanks so much, Sheila! I cut my hair myself. I'm waiting for really big '80's hair to come back, I was excellent at it!

I'm an expressive arts therapist, and I work with children, youth, and families. When I was hired, I had waist-length hair and always wore it in a braid or bun. Now my 'do IS really fun - and dries fast! It fell out when I was ill, but I was able to donate a good chunk. I'm sure I'll post about my hair evolution at some point. I am extremely fortunate that my workplace is inclusive and progressive in matters of fashion as well as social justice!

I am thrilled to see you here, and glad you're following - there will be several more obi belts!

    2. The Cyndi Lauper look is coming - I've seen it on the street a lot. The shaved sides and long pieces on top. I think bigass 80s hair will come too!

      Awesome, I adore obis.

    3. The young folk tell me this is "Skrillex" hair! But our Cyndi did it first and better. I remember being fascinated by the paintings on the soles of her pumps featured on possibly the back of one of her vinyl records.

  5. I love the pattern on your dress! And I love the under desk photo - I did that too after Megan did it, so welcome to the "club"! :)

  6. Amber, I love your style! However, it is very difficult to read white/gray text against a dark background. If you are still experimenting with your blog design, I hope you will consider going to a dark text on light background.

Thanks for considering my old eyeballs! :-)

    1. Thank you Louise! I am absolutely at the very beginning of blogging, and I appreciate your feedback. Text and photos will be larger immediately starting Aug. 16, and I will continue to attend to accessibility as I figure Blogger out!

  7. I am totally digging your obi belts and just may have to make a trip over to Modcloth -- are those a recent acquisition?

    1. Hi Shelley, only this one is from Modcloth, and it's still in stock. As a fellow Canadian, you will get dinged with hefty customs fees with every order, though! The quality is as the reviews say - glad I knew that going in; I got it anyway together with some other things because of the perfect colour and style.

If darling Jo of Elizabeth Kelly London on etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/elizabethkelly?page=1 had had one of her gorgeous leather ones in a similar colour as she does now, I would have gone that route for sure! That's where my black one (and red one which I'll surely be wearing soon) are from).

  8. I dub thee Master of Layers. I must do that under the desk pose, but be sure to have someone near by to help me get up :o

    1. I learned everything I know about layering from other fashion bloggers! There is another sweater that goes on top of all of this. :)

I really wanted to stay under my desk a good long while!
